 Pocket PC, or shortly PPC, is a type of hand-held sized computer. The Microsoft Windows Mobile Classic Operating System runs on it. It can carry out many of the operations,performed by a desktop PC. As per definition by Microsoft, the Pocket PC is "a hand-held device that enables users to store and retrieve e-mail, contacts, appointments, tasks, play multimedia files, games, exchange text messages with Windows Live Messenger, browse the Web, and more”. As per the standards, the Pocket PC should feature a touchscreen,touch pad, hardware application buttons. Also it should run on Microsoft's Windows Mobile edition. The hardware of the Pocket PC consists of AEM version4 compatible CPU.
There are several versions of operating system which are widely used in Pocket PCs, such as Windows Mobile 5,Windows Mobile 6,Windows Mobile 6.1,Windows Mobile 6.5,Windows Mobile 2003,Pocket PC 2000, Pocket PC 2002 etc.
There are numerous vendors for Pocket PCs in the market including Toshiba,Acer,Dell,Fujitsu Siemens and many more. Other Windows based similar devices manufactures by HP and Philips were available in the market much before Pocket PC was conceived. These gadgets ran on Windows CE 2.0–2.11. The interface was similar to the desktop versions of Windows.
Nowadays Pocket PCs with integrated mobile telephony, manufactured by companies like Orange, T Mobile, are available in the market. With a SIM card fixed in it properly,these devices can function as a smart phone.
Dell Axim x51V was one of the most popular Pocket PCs in the market before becoming defunct in 2007. It featured 3.7 inch color TFT VGA display with 640x480 resolution, Intel XScaleTM PXA270 Processor at 624 MHz, 336MB of Memory (256MB Flash, 64MB SDRAM), integrated 802.11b and Bluetooth 1.2, integrated Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator with 16MB video memory,1,100 mAh user replaceable battery.
Some manufacturers incorporated integrated GSM with in Pocket PCs. One of the most popular example is Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox N560 which features a VGA screen and an integrated SiRF Star III GPS.There is gulf of difference between Pocket PC with inbuilt telephony and the Windows mobile smart phones. On of the major difference is that Windows mobile smart phones do not feature touch screen. The HP hw6945 and HP iPAQ hw6515 models also come with integrated GPS and GSM/GPRS telephony.
