Debian 6.0 Squeeze- The Latest Free Operating System

Debian 6.0 Squeeze is a free operating system launched under GNU General Public License. There are two versions of Debian 6.0 Squeeze, namely - Debian GNU/Linux and Debian GNU/kFreeBSD. Integrated with the components of the GNU OS tools and Linux kernel, Debian GNU/Linux is one of the most influential and popular Linux distributions. The users of Debian are provided access to repositories consisting of thousands of software packages ready for installation and use. Debian strictly follows the Unix and free software philosophies. It could be used as a server as well as a desktop operating system. In fact it could run on computers ranging from palmtops to supercomputers.

Debian Project Management

The Debian project follows the Debian Constitution and the Social Contract which clearly states that the goal of the project is the development of a free operating system. More than three thousand software developers all over the globe designed and developed Debian operating systems. The Debian project has been supported by monetary contributions from several non profit organizations. However the non profit organization named “Software In The Public Interest” is the owner of the Debian trademark.

Features Of Debian 6.0

Debian 6.0 comes with KDE Plasma Desktop Applications, the GNOME, Xfce, and LXDE desktop environments as well as entire gamut of server applications. It is fully compatible with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.2 of the LSB. It supports totally 9 architectures,viz.- 32-bit PC / Intel IA-32 , 64-bit PC / Intel EM64T / x86-64, Motorola/IBM PowerPC, Sun/Oracle SPARC, MIPS, Intel Itanium, IBM S/390, and ARM EABI. Debian 6.0 Squeeze features two new ports to the kernel of the FreeBSD project using the known Debian/GNU userland: Debian GNU/kFreeBSD for the 32-bit PC and the 64-bit PC. These ports are not based on Linux kernels like the previous ones. Another improved feature of Debian 6.0 is totally bug free Linux kernel. The problematical firmware files of Linux Kernel are divided into separate softwares which are shifted from Debian main archive and placed into the non-free area of the archive, which is not enabled by default. Thus Debian 6.0 runs smoothly without any problem. A dependency based boot system has been incorporated into Debian 6.0. The boot system makes system start-up much faster and more robust due to parallel execution of boot scripts and correct dependency tracking between them.

Debian 6.0 Installation Procedure

Debian 6.0 could be installed from numerous installation medias like Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, CDs, USB stick and internet. GNOME is the default desktop environment and is available on the first CD. Other desktop environments — KDE Plasma Desktop and Applications, Xfce, or LXDE — could be installed through two alternative CD images. The desired desktop environment could also be slected from the boot menus of the CDs/DVDs. Multi architecture installation CDs and DVDs are available which support installation of multiple architectures from a single disc. Another unique feature of Debian 6.0 Squeeze is that it could be directly used without prior installation. The special images known as live images are generally used to install Debian GNU/Linux.
